Governance Is the Real Blocker

Spencer Kimball co-created GIMP with Peter Mattis at Berkeley and released it to the open source community in 1997. He worked on large-scale systems at Google, then co-founded Cockroach Labs, where he is CEO. AuthZed runs on CockroachDB.

Most of the hour is about Chitta, a system Spencer built during a month of paternity leave. The name is a Sanskrit and Pali word for the store of memory and impressions that lead to action. Chitta reads dense sources and turns them into structured knowledge that can be queried later.

He tested it on Cockroach's Zendesk tickets. Given only the customer's first message, it produced a full root cause analysis 41% of the time, in under a minute, at roughly $1.50 per ticket. The same model with no memory system scored around 10% on the same task. Human engineers rarely get there on the first pass either, though Spencer is careful to say that comparison isn't entirely fair to the humans.

The design point he keeps returning to is that distillation has to be done for a purpose. A Zendesk ticket, a Git log, and a source tree each need to be read differently depending on what you want from them. Reading code to add a feature and reading code to find a vulnerability produce different notes, for the same reason a person would notice different things.

The last stretch is about governance. Distilled knowledge has to be kept in separate pools per account so that details can't leak across them, and Spencer says that until that problem is solved broad adoption won't happen. He calls governance "the ultimate blocker" to AI adoption, which is the question this show is built around.
